Description: Eli Kobeli was born in Kroonstad (Free State) in 1932.

Eli was a painter of urban life, figures and abstract pictures. He studied under the American missionary, Reverend Hall Duncan and Cecil Skotnes at the Polly Street Art Centre in Johannesburg.

He worked in oils, gouache (method of painting in opaque pigments ground in water and thickened with a glue-like substance), watercolour and pastel.

A member of Artists under the Sun, Kobeli lived both in townships of both Alexandra and Soweto, which provided him with rich experience for the backdrop of his paintings.
